In 1849 thousands of people went to California to dig for gold and hopefully make their fortune.<br>Among them was a young man called Levi Strauss who migrated to the USA from Germany at the age of 18. He didn’t find any gold but he made a lot of money. <br>Levi Strauss and his birthplace (now museum) in Buttenheim (Germany)<br><br>Levi Strauss realised that the gold miners needed very strong clothes which were comfortable to wear and easy to wash. <br>He bought some thick cotton denim from a mill in New Hampshire, USA.<br><br>He decided to make trousers from this strong material. Levi Strauss jeans found in a goldmine.<br><br>The name denim came from serge de Nimes, after the town of Nimes in the south of France.<br>Levi Strauss’s trousers were later called jeans, possibly because sailors from Genoa in Italy wore them.<br>The popularity of jeans increased and they were sold right across the USA. In 1873, stitching, shaped like the wings of the Rocky Mountain Eagle, was added.<br><br>In the 1950s, jeans became extremely popular all over the country. Other brand names such as Lee Coopers and Wranglers also became famous. <br><br><br>Film stars wore them in movies. They were associated with rock and roll and pop music. <br>Marlon Brando screen idol in jeans in the 1950s.<br>In the 1950s, the fashion for jeans arrived in Europe. People began to wear jeans in their free time.<br><br>In the 1970s, people started decorating their jeans, cut off the legs to make Bermuda shorts, then short shorts, skirts, bags and so on. <br>Jeans were a great hit with the hippie revolution. Jeans were the only uniform to wear to a 1970’s pop concert.<br>The most famous jeans produced by Levi are Levi 501 needed to be shrunk to fit. Shown in a TV advertisement in Britain in the 1980s, they made the sales increase by 800 per cent.<br>New designer jeans with names like Gloria Vanderbilt, Calvin Klein, Armani and others also appeared at that time. <br>Since that time people have seen different types of jeans: ripped, frayed, torn, stonewashed, with lycra and various decorations such as embroidery, silver and gold spraying, Swarovski crystal beading, fur, feather, etc.<br><br>Jeans are an American invention, they began as an iconic symbol of the American West and now they are worn all over the world. <br>They will never die!<br><br><br><br><br></ins></div></td></tr>
